It’s story time with me today!
Social media is just throbbing with advice…from how you should be working out to how you should be eating to who you should be believing.
I’ve been there. Searching all over the internet for THE answer. I spent hours searching.
I tried yoga.
I tried meditation.
I tried exercise.
I tried dairy free.
I tried hyped-up vitamins.
I tried eating less.
I tried eating “healthy” (ahem…granola bars anyone?)
Guess what…I ended up wasting a whole lot of time & money and my symptoms just got worse.
The confusing thing was that I felt I was doing everything I was supposed to be doing and yet things weren’t getting better. WHY??
It wasn’t what MY body needed.
What I do today.
I still do yoga & exercise. I just do them different.
I found out that my adrenals were fatigued & not keeping up with the stress I was experiencing. With fatigued adrenals, all the cardio that the Internet said I should be doing was actually only stressing my body more. So I switched to 10-15 minute strength work & swimming instead.
I learned to recognize stress in my body.
Have you ever experienced a weird tingling in your arms? Excessive sweating? Or maybe you get heart palpitations. How about getting to the end of a day and feeling like you neck and hips are wound up like a tight rubber band? That, my friend, is highly likely stress. So many people don’t even know how to recognize the physical signs of stress until it lands them in the A&E.
I learned to recognize the physical signs of stress in my body & simply by recognizing it I was able to take deeper breaths, advocate for myself when it was too much & choose to make healthier choices to deal with the stress. Instead of “I’m stressed. Let me get ice-cream” I thought “I’m stressed. Let me drink a calming tea & do yoga this evening instead of a workout”.
I learned to nourish MY body
Just because low carb diets are popular and granola bars claim to be healthy doesn’t mean they actually are… I learned that I needed to significantly increase my intake of veggies & reduce my hidden sugars (I’m looking at you, damn granola bars). Plus I also discovered after months of closely observing my body’s reaction to things, that caffeine & alcohol were also huge triggers for my symptoms. And actually dairy & gluten are fine for me.
I addressed nutrient deficiencies
Instead of just browsing the health store and taking home what looked like it might help (tell me I’m not the only one that has done this), I actually identified the nutritional deficiencies I had & addressed them specifically. Using targeted supplements to bring my nutrient levels back up to where they should be, I experienced unbelievable symptom relief. It wasn’t just guesswork anymore & I wasn’t wasting money on popular products I didn’t actually need.
